Storage Solutions: One of the key factors that determine the longevity and effectiveness of your PVA products is how they're stored. As with other types of carp rig, you’ll need to start off with a leader. For solid bags, however, it’s often recommended that you use a slightly heavier leader than normal – something in the 15lb-20lb range. Observations: Watch for signs of fish activity around your baited area. If there's no activity after a reasonable amount of time, consider recasting. Each Gemini Leader is produced using 100% Fluorocarbon, our leaders are not plastic coated. The fluorocarbon material we use has a light refractive index of 1.42 (very similar to water), making them near invisible underwater.

PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) bags are designed to be water-soluble and biodegradable. When they dissolve in water, they typically break down into harmless compounds. Thus, in the context of their intended use for fishing bait presentations, PVA bags should not pollute the water. The extremely dense nature of Fluorocarbon material used ensures these leaders sink very fast and keep everything pinned down on the lake bed. I prefer using dry baits because anything mildly wet will accelerate the dissolve speed of your PVA bag, which means you may not be fishing efficiently! But what makes this tactic so good and are there times when another approach may be a better option? This feature takes a close look at my approach with solid bags, how I use them to great effect and constructing them from start to finish.

Another situation where I have found solid bags particularly good is when fishing for small numbers of carp, where the numbers present are simply not enough to get them competing. In this situation, setting a trap on a feeding spot or a patrol route the fish are using regularly is more than enough to tempt a fish to drop down for a feed. A key question is how long should your PVA bag rig be? Well, you can use most ‘standard’ PVA solid bag sizes for the majority of angling situations.Roach and Rudd: Fish species that feed in shoals, might be attracted to the scattered bait presentation offered by PVA mesh, as it imitates a more natural food dispersion.

I feel the bag is most successful in a couple of situations; firstly, at those times when the fish are up for a feed but are not necessarily feeding hard on bait. These times may be when the water temperatures are low, or the pressure is high, whereby a well-placed solid bag can trip up a half-hearted feeding fish when a baiting approach may work against you. Bait Combinations: PVA products offer a platform for experimentation. However, it's wise to have a basic understanding of which baits work best with each method. All you need to do is attached your solid bag stems to your rig, place them into a solid bag, and store them somewhere dry until you need them. I usually keep 3 or 4 pre-tied in my tub of pellet mix. A solid bag rig is a type of carp fishing rig that can be used to catch carp. It consists of a solid PVA bag filled with dry feed bait such as pellets, breadcrumb, chopped boilies, and additives such as salt. With regards to the mix, it is important to keep all of the particles small, with nothing exceeding 3mm in size. This means that when the bag is full and compressed down, there are no gaps present. From the autumn until the spring I opt for a low- oil type mix, generally light in colour with food items that are soluble and digestible for the carp in the cold water. The only time this will change is during the summer months, when I will switch over to an oily, fishmeal-based mix, where the oils and attraction can disperse well in the warmer water. On average, if you're not getting bites or seeing activity after about 30 minutes to an hour, it might be worth recasting. However, this is a general guideline and can vary based on the specific conditions and environment.

Years ago I started tying my bags or mesh to the hooklink swivel or above the lead, but Gardner and other brands now make PVA bag swivels or clips. It's easy enough to tie a bag on and hook the outside corner, so you can have ready prepared bags or mesh. They have recommend tying a figure-of-eight loop in the end of your main line to allow for rapid changing of setups. On average, in moderate water temperatures, PVA mesh might take anywhere from a couple of minutes to about 20 minutes to fully dissolve. It's always a good idea to test the specific mesh you're using in the water conditions you're fishing in to get an accurate dissolution time.Boilies: These are hard, round baits typically made from a mix of cereals, fish meals, and flavourings. Given their solid nature, boilies are versatile. They can be used with both PVA solid bags and mesh, but many anglers prefer to use PVA bags when introducing a small number of boilies directly around their hookbait. Bream and Tench: These fish sift through the substrate for food and are likely to be attracted to the dense baiting zones created by PVA bags. You’ll also want to use a leader material that is quite abrasion resistant. This will help to prevent the PVA from damaging your line as it dissolves. Fluorocarbon leaders are a good option, as they’re both strong and abrasion resistant. Always remember that fishing requires a blend of knowledge, observation, and intuition. While these are guidelines, each angling situation can be unique, so be prepared to adjust your tactics based on conditions and results. How long does PVA Mesh take to dissolve?
