About this deal

Unfortunately, the pacing felt a little off, and the last few chapters happened way too quickly - it seemed a bit rushed and as a result, the closure/ ambiguity was less effective than it could have been, in my opinion. Candice is a Contributing Editor to Grazia and regularly appears on radio and television news channels to talk about maternal mortality rates for black women in Britain. I’d twigged that bridal magazines and ads were pretty fully White but hadn’t gathered the lack of representation in baby and mum blogs and Instagram accounts: here Braithwaite tells it how it is and demonstrates how she is an agent for change.

Up until I was about five, I had been delighted to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar or Titch, but when I first came across Amazing Grace, I remember the warmth that grew in my tummy. There has always been knife crime however due to media reporting it seems to be a common occurrence amongst youngsters. The way these hateful ideologies are woven into the very fabric of elite institutions and society is broken apart and carefully depicted. Having grown up in north London, my knowledge of people falling into ‘road’ life is not quite the same as Cyn’s and Isaac’s knowledge - and experience - of it.

The technical storage or access is strictly necessary for the legitimate purpose of enabling the use of a specific service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user, or for the sole purpose of carrying out the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network.

to also know that Cyn undeniably has feelings for Isaac still is heart wrenching, but it’s only natural for her to feel that way, despite the information that was made known to her.

but if I'd had this as a teen, it would have been a 4 0r 5 stars, so it's hard to do a simple star rating. I really liked this book when I first started it, I was instantly into it which is down to the details in the storytelling. The text is accessible, gritty and authentic, making this the perfect book to use as a tool to spark discussions amongst teens about these important issues that are very much still prevalent. There were only a few girls who had copies in the secondary school I was attending, so there was a waiting list to read it. Closer to home, I can count on one hand the number of girls I knew who fell pregnant in year 10 or year 11 (and younger girls in fact). It is a compilation of essays about all the things Candice wishes someone had talked to her about when she was a young Black girl growing up in London. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). She has the support of head boy Thomas and his adopted brother Isaac, the only other black kid at their school. The murder of her older brother has had her family moving away from the living memory of the crime but Cynthia struggles when it comes to her new way of life.

Every other Sunday (I won’t lie and say I attended each week), I would watch as a preacher decked out in an eightpiece suit (nine if he was wearing a toupee) would take to the pulpit and remind us that it was tithe and offering time. Examining the problematic expectations of being Black and British in a more exclusive white setting, Braithwaite cleverly uses a love triangle to manipulate the narrative into a discussion of societal expectations. Consenting to these technologies will allow us to process data such as browsing behavior or unique IDs on this site. The premise of this book is about a young girl named Cynthia Adegoke, who has to transfer to an elite school after her family experienced a traumatic incidents back in London. An exploration of race, class, love and the complexities of growing up as a black British teen, from bestselling author Candice Brathwaite. As a Nigerian migrant to the UK at a young age - a time when stories similar to this were not uncommon - I could picture most of the details in this story as I read each page. Candice started utilizing the internet in 2015 to tell her own motherhood story, keen to show that young black families weren't just surviving but thriving, and her straight-talking, original content really struck a chord with fans and brands alike. And if you didn’t get the new house, or your child didn’t make it to university, or you still had cancer? I could really go on about how Instagram are doing a disservice to small bloggers and creatives but I won’t.
