About this deal

Whether you’re touching up the skirting boards or planning a big interior redesign, finding the best satinwood paint for your specific project is key. And while you’d be forgiven for not spotting the difference between the various brands of mid-sheen white, choosing the right paint will make the painting process and end result that much better. With that being said, the opaqueness left something to be desired. It took me three thin coats to reach a good opacity, which was a surprise coming from a world where two coats are usually sufficient. Consistency, Durability and How Fast it Dries This Dulux paint will usually only need one or two coats, and is ready to recoat after six hours, meaning you can easily complete a decent-sized painting project in under a day. Cleaning up is a cinch, too. Given the great sheen and decent coverage, you may be surprised to hear that this satinwood paint is actually water-based, meaning brushes and rollers can be cleaned with just soapy water. This satinwood paint from Leyland is an excellent all-rounder. Suitable for almost all projects, it’s easy to use, long-lasting and durable. While it will need two coats to get the fullest coverage, a little goes a very long way, and as you don’t need to use primer, it’s great for those on a budget. Because it’s water-based, this paint will also never yellow with age, making it a perfect paint for any areas that might not get a lot of sunlight, such as skirting boards behind furniture and the inside of cupboards. It also comes in a great range of colours, although mostly pastel or neutral shades.

Gloss paints have been the go-to for windows, doors and skirting boards due to their robust nature and ability to be wiped clean, but are falling in popularity because of the dated finish and tendency to yellow over time. Key Specs – Paint base: Water; Approx. coverage: 16m 2per litre; Touch-dry time: 1-2 hours; Recoat time: 6 hours; Other colours available: Yes Free sachet delivery is available on all Rust-Oleum sachets. These are shipped direct from the manufacturer using Whistl. Can take 5-10 working days. In terms of durability, the paint’s robustness post-curing was commendable, making it a decent option for exterior fascias, especially when used in conjunction with a fast-drying undercoat like Caparol. How Does it Compare to Johnstone’s Aqua Guard?Satinwood paint has risen in popularity over the last few years. Its medium-sheen gives a more contemporary look to doors, windows and skirting boards than traditional gloss paint. Most satinwood paints are also a great choice if you’re looking to paint a radiator or any exposed metal pipework, and can even be used on kitchen and bathroom walls.

It can be applied with either a paint brush or a foam roller, and getting a smooth surface with no streaks or drips is easy, even for beginners. Although it should always be applied in a well-ventilated area, it has a much weaker odour than other oil-based satinwood paints. Painting wood or metal can be simple, especially when you pair the best materials with the correct preparation. Discover our range of high quality wood paint and metal paint to give your interior or exterior surfaces the excellent finish it deserves. Whether you’re breathing new life into upcycled and renovated wooden furniture or giving rusty metal work a new long-lasting weather protected finish, our durable paint can aid the transformation. The Aqua Guard covers well without an undercoat, while Leyland’s coverage was significantly less impressive. Even a third coat struggled to get the job done. The paint was difficult to work in by brush, and even splaying the bristles didn’t help. The Leyland paint has a recoat time of four hours – typical for a water-based product. Success Story Satinwood paints can either be oil- or water-based. While both can be used for most jobs, it’s always worth reading the tin to make sure the paint you’ve chosen is suitable for what you have in mind.

The best satinwood paint you can buy in 2023 1. Crown Solo One Coat Satin Paint: The best one coat satinwood paint Key Specs – Paint base: Water; Approx. coverage: 12m 2per litre; Touch-dry time: 2 hours; Recoat time: 6 hours; Other colours available: Yes, a wide range One particular success story is when I used this Leyland Satin paint on an indoor pool area. It took a few coats, but it was perfect for the job. The finish was a soft satin that was pleasant to the eye and, as far as I’m aware, is still looking good a year on. Final Thoughts

Can this paint be used on plastic surfaces? No, this paint is specifically designed for wood and metal surfaces. It is not recommended for use on plastic or other materials. Eggshell paints are closer in sheen to satinwood, but are a little more matte. Again, these are better suited to walls and ceilings as they aren’t as durable as satinwood. What do I need to consider when choosing a satinwood paint? Aqua Guard is more expensive than Leyland Fast Drying Satin, but it is infinitely better. In fact, there isn’t a lot of products available it isn’t better than. We’re talking about a fully water-based satinwood with great opacity, is easy to use, leaves a great finish and dries very durable.

It’s hard-wearing, easy to clean and usually very straightforward to use. While it’s most commonly found in only one or two shades of white, some brands offer a wider range of colours, giving you the option to truly personalise your space. Leyland and Johnstone’s paints are both manufactured by PPG, Leyland being the budget brand, and Johnstone’s being the premium. The alternative to Leyland Fast Drying Satin is a product called Johnstone’s Aqua guard. Aqua Guard is probably the brand leader amongst trade professionals, and it’s a product I can vouch for.
