About this deal

Whether you choose to live with a roommate, or fly solo, you’ll first need to decide what you can afford. Though the pain of work is a consequence of the fall, work itself is not a punishment. In a perfect world, we would still work. How do I know this? Because before the fall, in the Garden of Eden when it was a perfect world, humankind was still commanded to work. In other words, we’re created to work. Paradise is working the way God intended and joyfully serving him through that work. When we joyfully serve him through our work today we are showing the world a preview of paradise by being a reflection of God and his coming kingdom. “Whatever you do”—which covers everything you do and every possible job—work hard at it. Serve God through it. And you might find that you start to actually like it. You might remember saying, “I don’t want to grow up!” when you were little, but now that you’re leaving home for the first time , or moving out of the dorm, being an adult takes on a whole new meaning.

Parents with disposable income and access to every conceivable product or service served up an obstacle-free childhood, failing to recognize the consequence: a generation of rising adults ill-prepared for the role. If you were fortunate to grow up with parents, grandparents, older siblings, aunts or uncles, even a neighbor that took the time to assign chores or spend time teaching you things… you’re already ahead of the game when it comes to running a household. There are some terrific money saving apps that make budgeting and saving a cinch, so you really don’t have to think about it too much. If you want to be a bit more fancy, and have the means to do so, you can try a meal subscription service like Blue Apron. You just preselect a menu and the amount of meals you want for the week, and they ship them to you… with all instructions and ingredients in one box!FamilyLife®. All Rights Reserved. I grew up—ahem, adulted—before this was a thing. Know how? I got older. As I did, new opportunities and responsibilities came my way and… I coped. Sometimes gracefully and with ease, and sometimes less so, via heartbreaking mistakes. Mercifully, my forays into new, adult terrains happened pre-social media, so failures were localized and successes taken in stride. Mostly, to my recollection, my transition to adulthood happened gradually and unceremoniously, save a few key milestones that called for popping the Champagne.

At this point in your life, you’ve likely held at least one job… maybe more. And you’ve probably gotten money for birthdays, holidays and other big moments.

Maybe you would prefer your place is within walking distance to a lively downtown scene? Or perhaps you’d prefer the peace and quiet most of the time? Bob: JP is a pastor in Waco, Texas. Harris Creek is the church where he pastors. He is married; father of three kids. This article breaks down some of the most important lessons on “how to adult,” from the simple yet essential (like cleaning your house or cooking a nutritious meal) to the challenging yet rewarding (making new friends or balancing your budget). There are plenty of resources along the way to make this transition into being a grown-up a little less challenging.

Emma King is passionate about fighting for the voiceless, training up the next generation in the Word of God, and teaching others to put on the Armor of God in all things. She has worked in Churches in various different roles including worship leading, children's ministry and administrative assistance. No matter the role, Emma's desire to pour biblical truths into the lives of others runs deep. Jonathan “JP” Pokluda is the Lead Pastor of Harris Creek Baptist Church in Waco, TX. He was formerly the leader of The Porch in Dallas, TX, which grew to be the largest weekly young adult gathering of its kind in the country. JP didn’t come to understand the grace of the Gospel until his early twenties after being involved in different denominational churches his entire life. This ignited a desire in him to inspire young adults to radically follow Jesus Christ and unleash them to change the world. JP's partner in ministry is Monica, his wife of seventeen years, and together they disciple their children Presley, Finley, and Weston. Bob: You’ve worked with young people/with young singles through a ministry called The Porch that was a part of Watermark and is, now, in churches all across the country. What are your observations about this generation? Knowing how to administer first aid can be life-saving in those circumstances. First aid treatment can prevent your condition from worsening or keep a loved one alive untilthey receive medical assistance. How we work, and the way we honor our employers by doing our best for them, is supposed to stand out as different from the rest of the world. It’s supposed to make people notice and make them more willing to listen to us when we explain why we work that way. We’re to be “the light of the world” and “let [our] light shine before others” (Matthew 5:14–16), and that includes shining at work.Upon graduation, Jaime & Rose Mary began their ministry as youth pastors at ICCM Tabernacle of Life in Harlingen, Texas. They continued working until God moved them to start Cross Church, formerly known as Valley International Christian Center, alongside their parents in 1995. Although the early days were a struggle, the Church endured and by the grace of God, Pastor Loya began to experience great success in ministry. This may sound like a lot, but it’s really not… especially if you have a roommate to divide and conquer with. 8. Cooking
