The date in my planner glares at me. I’m four weeks away from my med school admissions test and I can feel its nearness starting to bite at my heels. But I know if I don’t turn up like I promised, my friends will have words for me, so I shove the planner in my bag and head out. There were a couple of places that had me questioning the continuity of events, or the plausibility of baking a significant amount of food in a short time, these minor infractions had me forcefully suspending belief to move forward with this book but it did not detract from the message - that was blatantly obvious. Abooto and Hooyo (Hanan’s grandmother and mother) also stand out as especially brilliant characters. They have suffered horrendous trauma (as have Hanan and her siblings) but they still find good in the world and pass on positivity to their family. Abooto had some very funny moments too, and I was thrilled to see elements of my own Nan in her. I learnt a lot about both Islam and Somali culture from the Ali family - and this novel in general - and I hope that recommending this book to others will help them do the same. That was the moment I realized that even though Aabo was no longer with us, my family and I still had each other to protect. I would never be vulnerable. Not with them around.

The Natural Health Service: What the Great Outdoors Can Do For Your Mind written and narrated by Isabel Hardman (Bolinda Audio) Impressive, Nasra says, smirking. We’re going to have to throw you a party when you finally hit a hundred. I loved the sibling relationships between Hanan and her twin brother and younger siblings. And I really loved how we see her friendships too and that it isn’t perfect but they are able to apologise and reconcile. You Think You Know me is targeted at the YA market, it’s been a long, long time since I fitted into this category!!! But don’t let that put you off it’s a powerful, heartbreaking and beautiful written piece of fiction. The book looks at what it’s like to be a young British muslim experiencing and dealing with islamaphobia. When I requested this ARC by looking at its cover and plot, it sounded promising to me. But believe me this book is a lot more than that. I have rated this as a 5 star read but in truth, I want to rate it as a 7/5 star read🤭. Hanan has always been the good, quiet, well-behaved girl that she not wants to be, but has to be. She’s already a target for bullying by a group at school her friends call The Braids (mean girls amped up) and being loud, speaking up, would make her more of a target for their hate. Even her teachers use her for her image as their flawless, poster child for a Muslim student at the school. But Hanan has dreams, wishes, and desires to speak her mind and stand up for herself and every other person that gets the same racist undertones (which is just blatant racism most of the time.) You Think You Know Me’ is a book that belongs in every secondary school library; it’s heartfelt and educational, all whilst being engaging and brilliantly written. It carries important messages too, of acceptance, bravery and kindness to name a few. Informed by the author’s experiences, the novel shares the story of Hanan, who lost herfather as she and her family fled civil war in Somalia. Now living in London with her mum, grandmother, twin brother and little sisters, Hanan is a model student, dedicated to herloving family, and to the memory of her beloved dad. These two are such antisocial trash, she says, releasing me and indicating Lily and Isha, who are both absorbed with their phones. I’ve had no one to talk to for the last five minutes, she complains. She slides off her gold-rimmed glasses, cleaning the lenses with the edge of her headscarf, and makes a face.
