Directed by Steven Spielberg based on Peter Benchley’s novel of the same name, Jaws is remarkable for a number of reasons.

The only shame is that the original theatrical poster isn’t included here as artwork (it's included in the poster). Jaws 2 is hardly a bad sequel per se, but it's certainly not in the same ballpark as the original classic. Lightening in a bottle, the original film's strengths coming from the lack of working special effects and the time this afforded its characters, any sequel only really had one place to go - showing more of the shark. The track sounds very similar to that on previous versions – it’s a solid but unexciting mix that feels somewhat hemmed in by its single speaker origins.I was always pretty happy with the 2016 Blu-ray, it was a welcome upgrade over the old DVD, but I did feel brightness wise it was a bit too hot. Perhaps not as sharp and gorgeous as what Universal offered for the original Jaws, nonetheless, the studio delivers a worthwhile 2160p HDR10 upgrade for Jaws2. Building on Bouzereau’s work, it includes additional stories and behind-the-scenes material (it’s also narrated by Scheider). And so, a few years after Jaws scared everyone out of the water, Jaws 2 opened up with the catch phrase “Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…”.

Today, the film remains potent but is more notable for the fact that it takes its time telling its story and building suspense. The white scale is just as impressive, with highlights giving pop to the picture; glints of moon- or sun-light off the water, metallic sheen, sweat, everything looks so natural. It obviously lacks any real top and bottom end but the musicality doesn’t seem to suffer too much, neither does overall clarity. Detail is stunning, from the wrinkles and sideburns of Quint’s grizzled face, to clothing weaves, to sand grains on the beach to edges of Brodie’s jeep as he drives to town; everything is keen, tight and sharp. Retaining the wonderful tone and vibe of the first film – which the initial attempt at the production looked to avoid – and throwing a handful of terrific set-piece attacks means that while it will never ever scale the giddy heights of the first film, it remains a hugely fun and somewhat worthy follow up.Brody once again is convinced that another killer, great white shark is circling and waiting to snack on some islanders.

If the slip was the the original poster (front the front) and the steelbook art is from the back - that would have paid off.The poster for Jaws 2, as you might remember, has Jaws getting ready to attack a water-skier who is out for a ride. The sole HD feature, Jaws: The Restoration, was produced for the 2012 Blu-ray and is self-explanatory. This, naturally, limits the range of sound, but you still hear the trademark score to let you know when Jaws will pop out of the water.

Stephen Spielberg had helped the original and wanted nothing to do with another installment, he felt that he had made the “defacto” movie and that it wasn’t to be messed with.

However, what’s here sounds like a decent presentation of a 1978 soundtrack and that shouldn’t be dismissed, despite its inherent weaknesses. You also get a nifty 44-page softcover book of liner notes, rare photographs, and production artwork. The cast of JAWS 2 includes Roy Scheider, reprising his role as Police Chief Martin Brody, Lorraine Gary as Brody's wife Ellen, and Murray Hamilton as Mayor Larry Vaughn.
